Why price per terabyte beats sticker price
The number on the shelf edge tells you what leaves your wallet. Cost per terabyte tells you what you actually get for it — and the two often point in opposite directions.
Walk down any storage aisle and the prices shout at you: this drive is ‘only’ a hundred-something, that one is well over two hundred. The cheaper one feels like the smart buy. But the sticker price answers the wrong question. You are not buying a drive; you are buying capacity. The right question is how much each terabyte costs — and once you ask it, the ‘expensive’ drive is frequently the bargain.
The metric in one line
Cost per terabyte is just a product’s price divided by its capacity in terabytes. That’s it. It collapses two numbers into one that you can compare across any two products, regardless of size. A worked example (clearly illustrative)
Take two round, made-up drives to see the trap. Say a 4 TB drive sells for $200 and a 2 TB drive sells for $120. The smaller drive has the smaller, friendlier sticker — but do the division:
- $200 ÷ 4 TB = $50 per TB
- $120 ÷ 2 TB = $60 per TB
The drive that costs more money up front is cheaper storage — about 17% cheaper per terabyte. Buy two of the small drives to match the capacity of one big one and you’ve spent $240 to store what $200 would have stored, while also using two drive bays and two power connectors instead of one. The sticker said ‘save money’; the math said the opposite.
This isn’t a quirk of those particular numbers. Across hard drives especially, the fixed cost of the motor, heads and enclosure gets spread across more platters as capacity rises, so $/TB tends to fall as you climb — up to a point.
Where the sweet spot sits
Bigger is cheaper per terabyte only until you reach the newest, largest flagship capacities, where scarcity and binning push the price per terabyte back up. The lowest $/TB usually lives a tier or two below the maximum — often in the high-capacity-but-not-bleeding-edge range. The only way to know today’s sweet spot is to look, because it moves with the market. That’s exactly what the rankings are for: sort by $/TB and the sweet spot floats to the top.
Where sticker price misleads you
Several common situations punish sticker-price thinking:
- Small ‘affordable’ drives. A 1–2 TB drive almost always has a higher $/TB than a 12–16 TB one. The low sticker hides expensive storage.
- External vs internal. Large external desktop drives are sometimes cheaper per terabyte than the bare internal drive inside them, because the finished consumer product is priced aggressively. That’s the whole basis of shucking.
- Comparing across technologies. A ‘cheap’ NVMe drive still costs many times more per terabyte than a hard drive. If your goal is bulk capacity, a low flash sticker is still expensive storage — see HDD vs SSD.
- Used enterprise drives. A retired datacenter disk can carry a higher sticker than a tiny consumer drive yet deliver the lowest $/TB on the whole site. The sticker tells you nothing about value here.
When sticker price legitimately wins
Cost per terabyte is the right default, not the only consideration. Sometimes the cheaper-per-TB option is wrong for the job: you may need NVMe speed, a warranty, low power draw, or simply not need the extra capacity a bigger drive forces on you. The discipline is to start from $/TB, then knowingly pay a premium for a specific reason — not to let a small sticker make the decision for you. The habit to build
Before any storage purchase, do the division. Price ÷ terabytes. Compare that number, not the one on the shelf. Most of the time the result is a pleasant surprise: the drive you assumed was a splurge turns out to be the cheapest way to store a terabyte.
